The Seven Types of
Effective Retargeting

Search Retargeting

Retargets an audience based on recent searches they have done on the major search engines or on your website.

Example

An online retailer knows that they want to target anyone searching on Google for the term "prada purses". Using search retargeting the advertiser can serve display ads to anyone that recently conducted this search.

Strength of intent:

Advanced Site Retargeting

Retargets your existing users that have been to your site based on some action they have taken on your site.

Example

A retailer has thousands of products for sales on their site. By recording the exact products that a user browses, a retailer can leverage site retargeting to serve display ads that contain imagery of the exact products the prospective customer browsed but didn't purchase.

Strength of intent:

SEO/SEM Retargeting

Retargets your existing users based on how they arrive to your site.

Example

A credit card company knows that 80% of people that come to their site do not convert. Using SEO/SEM retargeting this advertiser is able to retarget their site visitors with an extremely targeted offer based on the exact keywords they used to arrive at their site.

Strength of intent:

Email Retargeting

Retargets existing newsletter subscribers with display advertisements before or after they have received your newsletter.

Example

A daily-deal site sends out millions emails each day with a different offer in each city. Through Email Retargeting the daily-deal site is able to serve display ads to their list of email recipients in the hours before and after the email is sent - greatly enhancing email open rates and boosting sales.

Strength of intent:

Contextual Retargeting

Retargets an audience based on the exact articles they have read online.

Example

A B2B company is interested in targeting anyone that has read an article on cloud computing. Using contextual retargeting, the advertiser is able to record all users that read this particular article and continue to retarget them as the navigate elsewhere on the web.

Strength of intent:

Engagement Retargeting

Retargets an audience based on their engagement elsewhere on the Internet.

Example

A B2B company is interested in targeting anyone that has downloaded a white-paper on social media. Using engagement retargeting, the advertiser is able to record all users that took this action and continue to retarget them as the navigate elsewhere on the web.

Strength of intent:

Social Retargeting

Retargets users that share similar interests with your ideal target audience (ie. your converters).

Example

A post secondary school is looking to boost enrollment. Social retargeting discovers the connection between your ideal customers (eg. existing converting users) and other "new prospects" that share similar interests. Once this connection has been made, the new group of users is retargeted with display ads as they navigate across the web.
