Susana Simonpietri is the creative force behind Chango. Her distinct approach is grounded in the belief that affective design is rooted in clarity. Her work approaches the home as a site of presence: carefully edited environments that feel liveable rather than styled, and personal without excess. 

Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Susana grew up immersed in art and ideas. Her coastal childhood home was layered floor to ceiling with artwork of every medium, scale, and era. This formative, eclectic environment shaped her deep respect for culture and creativity, while simultaneously sparking a longing for calm and restraint. That tension, between input and relief, continues to shape her work today. 

Susana earned her MFA in Interior Design from the Pratt Institute and went on to work across both residential and hospitality design. 

In 2009, Susana formed Chango. Chango is named after the gregarious blackbirds native to Puerto Rico, a nod to Susana’s appreciation for the playful and unexpected. Leading a close-knit team of designers and architects in Brooklyn, Susana fosters a culture of autonomy and respect amongst both her team and the clients she works with. 

This collaborative and client focused process results in homes that are able to become true expressions of the individuals who inhabit them. Every project reflects the balance of beauty, practicality, and personality which can only come through the thoughtful practice of restraint and curation.
